Investment in people and production at NTS Newcastle sees sales increase

A £500k investment at National Timber System’s Newcastle site to improve staff facilities and install new machinery has seen sales from the site rise from £5m in 2021 to £8m.

Floor cassettes and the NTSROOF® panelised roof system were added to the range of products manufactured at Newcastle, one of four NTS sites, in 2021. This followed staff training at NTS Catterick where NTSROOF has been produced since 2015. Roof trusses and spandrel panels are also manufactured at NTS Newcastle.

Neil Phillips, NTS Newcastle Site Manager said: “There was a clear opportunity to increase production across the range at Newcastle through the installation of more advanced machinery and the associated skills training.

“The investment has allowed us to make some important changes for our people too, including improving the office environment and canteen area. As we are committed to ongoing training in-house, our meeting/training room has also been renovated.”

Neil has just been promoted to the role of site manager having previously been operations manager. He began his career as a trainee woodworking machinist at Joseph Thompson at Tyne Dock on Tyneside in 1997, and joined Arnold Laver’s engineered wood products division in 2006.

Nick Kershaw, NTS Managing Director said: “I’m delighted that Neil has become site manager at Newcastle. He has wide experience across timber, operations and machinery.

“Neil has improved health and safety culture and recruited, trained and developed significant numbers of people to become part of the division.”

The investment at NTS Newcastle is part of a wider programme totalling £1.5m across the four manufacturing sites over the last 12 months. NTS will open a fifth manufacturing site at Wolverhampton later this year.

NTS is the engineered wood products division of National Timber Group.
