Building New Homes Faster

Nick Kershaw, our Managing Director, shares how NTS is prioritising an off-site component offering and a blended approach to help customers build homes faster.

With the government’s ambition to build 1.5 million new homes during this parliament, NTS is focused on an off-site component offering and blended approach – ready to support our customers to allow them to build houses quicker” says Nick Kershaw, Managing Director of National Timber Systems.

Using panelised timber products in a whole range of building types – housing, hospitals, schools, modular – is a proven way for builders to increase their output. Nick shared: “Through our expertise and capacity in designing and manufacturing cassettes and panels we are already developing framework partnerships with those supplying into these sectors.

“We have worked with our customers to deliver this blended approach, traditional build plus modern methods of construction, for many years helping to save valuable weeks on build programmes.”

Off-site manufactured products offer other advantages too, including dimensional accuracy, less on-site wastage through pre-assembly and reduced need for multiple associated trades on-site.

Nick highlights: “The blended approach is based on trust and reliability to ensure build programmes stay on track. Our innovative thinking and expertise in design for manufacturing and value engineering helps our customers reduce build times on-site.

Engineered wood products such as engineered floor joists packages, roof trusses, spandrel and gable panels have long played their part as home builders have turned to products that help them build faster.

Nick further states: “The case for now using a wider range of EWPs to help build more homes more sustainably more quickly is clear.

We have further developed the NTSROOF® range to include an integrated floor system, significantly speeding up the install times and reducing complex interface issues, and a 9+ metre span version which requires no additional structural steel supports.

GreenBox® is a floor-cassette system we are launching in the UK in collaboration with international engineering, design and technology firm Thornton Tomasetti. The lightweight engineered-timber system is an alternative to concrete floors, with less mass and a fraction of the embodied carbon. The system can be used in new builds, extensions or renovations for commercial and multi-occupancy residential developments.”

Although we are predominantly supply only, we do offer supply and fit packages. Supply only can be enhanced to supply with assist, providing additional support and expertise to our customers to ensure the on-site teams are trained to fit our products efficiently in accordance with our technical specifications and NHBC and other warranty providers.

As part of National Timber Group we can also access a wider range of products for housing and development such as door kits and sets, studwork, MDF mouldings and doors.

We are committed to our skilled workforce, aiming for continuous improvement in our operations. We are well placed to supply customers across the country from our four strategically located sites at Sheffield, Bristol, Catterick and Newcastle. Our fifth site at Wolverhampton is already secured which will add significant extra capacity.

We’re ready to scale-up to meet demand, and we can help home builders to do that too.
