It has been developed in-house by Dan Hodgkinson I-Joist Design Manager and Rob Close Senior I-Joist Designer.
Dan Hodgkinson said: “I’ve always thought that the industry as a whole could do a far better job at developing new designers. With this in mind, I’ve been keen to introduce an in-house training programme for some time now, so to see this coming to fruition at NTS is extremely satisfying.”
Julian Elsbury, NTS Design Manager, further commended the team adding: “It’s been very satisfying to see the focus that Dan and Bob have put towards creating this excellent in-house training course. Although there has been a lot of progress made over the last couple of years through the TRA’s Roof Truss design programme, we still have quite a void to fill from an I-Joist design viewpoint. Therefore, to see them take the initiative and launch this training material will result in our trainees being moulded into future NTS designers capable of providing our customers with cost effective, building regulation compliant build solutions.”
The course begins with a two day in-person intensive introduction which focuses on the fundamentals of I-Joist design. This is followed by design software training using Steico Konstruct. Ongoing learning and assessment via video calls and branch visits is planned to run for nine to 12 months, leading to the trainees becoming designers with NTS.

NTS is a member of the Trussed Rafter Association and both Dan Hodgkinson and Julian Elsbury, NTS Design Manager, are also involved in the development of TRA’s metal web joist training programme.
